RENAISSANCE

Last time I wrote something, It was on Escom. It was a sustained defense that never saw the light of the printers. You see I have always believed that removing people from Escom as many think, cannot be the solution to our electricity problems. Neither would blaming the electricity engineers be of any use. I argued and will always argue, that unless the government invests heavily in power production by revamping the power generating stations (most of which were commissioned in the 1950's) and exploring the possibility of setting up small power generating units like Wovwe, never expect any change in the Black outs.I also would like to add here, that a steady power supply is as important as a steady forex supply. I know lots of bloggers would not share this but believe me. Companies are failing to grow and produce not because they cannot import raw materials (because of forex Shortage) but because power supply has been interrupted. Now my principal argument is: If government is really serious on development, make a deal with the private sector. Government concentrates on improving the access and the quality of power supply while the Private sector takes the responsibilty of renovating some of the roads in our townships (after all, it will only take a small share of their profits to do a work that will in real sense benefit the very same companies-by the fact that it is the same companies employees-bosses who use these roads.

agreed. the impact of intermittent power supply on foreign investment has been down-played. maybe it is hard to quantify?
